Overview
AI Town is a narrative-first virtual town designed to evaluate how capable an AGI “player” agent is in complex, interactive situations. Instead of focusing on isolated tasks, AI Town emphasizes story-driven experiences: the town runs through evolving storylines, and its characters respond to events, each other, and the player in ways that feel coherent and consequential. This setting creates a high-interaction environment where the player agent must make sense of context, communicate effectively, coordinate or compete with others, and adapt to changing circumstances.
The project supports open-ended participation: storylines provide direction while leaving room for different choices, outcomes, and social dynamics. As a result, AI Town can produce diverse episodes that range from routine daily interactions to high-stakes conflicts, enabling systematic comparisons across scenarios of varying difficulty. By combining narrative realism with repeatable evaluation protocols, AI Town helps researchers and developers understand not only whether an agent can complete tasks, but also how it behaves when decisions have social and longer-term consequences.
